National Sports Awards 2024 announced

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the National Sports Awards 2024. It has been announced to give Khel Ratna to shooter Manu Bhakar, who won 2 bronze medals in Paris Olympics, world chess champion D Gukesh, hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and para athlete Praveen Kumar. This is India’s biggest sports award. It is given on the basis of the performance of the players during the last four years. According to the list of awarded players, 34 players have received the Arjuna Award, including two in the life time category. The President of India will present the awards to the awardees at a special ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025.

Announcement of Delhi Assembly elections 2025

The Election Commission has announced the dates of Delhi Assembly elections. The tenure of the 70-member Delhi Assembly is ending on 23 February. Elections will be held in Delhi in one phase. Voting will take place on 5 February. Counting of votes will take place on February 8, 2025. Notification will be issued for elections on 70 assembly seats in Delhi on January 10. The date of nomination is 17 January. Candidates can withdraw their names till 20th January.

Ashok Vajpayee, Chitra Mudgal and Nirmala Jain awarded with Shalaka

Hindi Academy Delhi has announced to give Shalaka Samman to senior litterateurs Professor Nirmala Jain, Ashok Vajpayee and Chitra Mudgal for 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 respectively. According to a release issued by Hindi Academy Delhi, an amount of Rs 5 lakh each will be provided to the three senior litterateurs. The awards were decided in the meeting of the Governing Committee of Hindi Academy Delhi held under the chairmanship of Delhi’s Art, Culture and Language Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Indian Coast Guard gets two fast patrol vessels

Two indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard were launched by Goa Shipyard Limited on January 5. The name of one of them is Amulya and the other is Akshay. This fast patrol vessel is capable of rapidly completing missions like maritime security, search and rescue operations and coastal surveillance.

Bhuvnesh Kumar becomes Chief Executive Officer of UIDAI

On the first of January, Bhuvnesh Kumar took over as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). He is a 1995 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. Along with being the CEO of UIDAI, he is also the Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. Before this, he had also worked as Joint Secretary in MeitY.

Former judge V Ramasubramanian becomes chairman of National Human Rights Commission

Former Supreme Court judge V Ramasubramanian has been appointed Chairman of NHRC. President Draupadi Murmu made this appointment. This appointment has been made under the Human Rights Protection Act, 1993. Justice Ramasubramanian will be the Chairman of NHRC from the date he assumes charge.

Bharatpol portal launched

Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Bharatpol portal developed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi. The objective of the Bharatpol portal is to streamline processing of all requests for international assistance through Interpol, including the issuance of Red Notices and other Interpol notices. This portal has been developed to combat transnational crimes including cyber, financial and organized crime, online radicalization and drug and human trafficking.

Asia’s biggest aero show Aero India 2025 will be held in Bengaluru.

The 15th edition of Asia’s largest aero show Aero India 2025 will be held from 10 to 14 February at Yelahanka, Bengaluru, Karnataka. The theme of this program is Runway to a Billion Opportunities. Aero India will provide a platform to foreign and Indian firms to promote indigenization and showcase cutting-edge technologies. Bilateral meetings will also be organized during the program to strengthen defense and aerospace relations with friendly countries.

Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

In the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 played between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia won against Team India in a one-sided manner. Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by 3-1 after defeating India by six wickets in the fifth and final cricket test match. Team India started the 5-match series with a win, but after this the Indian team could not win a single match.

Anahat won Under-17 girls’ singles title in British Junior Open in Squash.

In Squash, India’s Anahat Singh has won the Under-17 Girls Singles title at the British Junior Open in Birmingham, England. The 16-year-old top seeded Indian player defeated Malika El Karaksi of Egypt 3-2. With this victory, Anahat has won his third British Junior Open title. Earlier, he had won in Under-11 category in the year 2019 and Under-15 category in the year 2023.

Kho Kho Federation unveils trophy and mascot

Kho Kho Federation of India (KKFI) on January 3 unveiled the trophy for the first Kho Kho World Cup to be held from January 13-19. Under the auspices of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), 21 men’s and 20 women’s teams from 24 countries across six continents will participate in the tournament at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium. The World Cup will have two trophies – a blue trophy for the men’s championship and a green trophy for the women’s event. KKFI also introduced the pair ‘Tejas’ and ‘Tara’, who serve as the official mascots of the tournament. The World Cup will be live streamed for free on Disney+ Hotstar and will also be broadcast for free on DD Sports.

Bumrah becomes the bowler with highest rating points in ICC test rankings

Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has become the Indian bowler with the highest rating points in the ICC Test rankings. He has strengthened his position at the top of the ICC men’s Test bowling rankings after another successful Test match in Melbourne, in which he took nine wickets in the match. Bumrah has achieved 907 rating points, leaving Ravichandran Ashwin behind. Bumrah is now joint 17th in the all-time list with former England spinner Derek Underwood. England fast bowlers Sydney Barnes (932) and George Lohman (931) top the list, while Imran Khan (922) and Muttiah Muralitharan (920) are at the third and fourth positions.
