Pithoragarh: In most parts of the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, while other parts of the country, Holi has been celebrated nowadays, while in more than 125 villages in its inner northern parts, people stay away from the fun of this festival of colors due to fear of wrath of their patriarchs. Puranik Pandey, a resident of Munsiyari town, said, “People from more than 125 villages in Talla Darma, Talla Johar area of Pithoragarh district and Malla Danpur areas of Bageshwar district do not celebrate the festival of Holi because their Kuldevata gets angry at playing with colors.”

Holi is a Sanatani Hindu festival that starts from the first Sunday of the month of Magh and runs till the Pratipada of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month. Padam Dutt Pant, cultural historian of Eastern Kumaon region, said, “This Hindu Sanatani festival brought the King of the Chand dynasty of Champawat in the 14th century in the Kumaon region.
