‘What is the British government doing…?’, issue of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh raised in UK Parliament

New Delhi:

bangladesh The echo of the attacks on Hindus is being heard all over the world. The issue of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh was also raised in the UK Parliament on Monday. British MPs Barry Gardiner and Priti Patel raised the issue of violence against Bangladeshi Hindus in the British Parliament. Gardiner, MP for Brent West, has asked the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs to make a statement on the situation in Bangladesh and the recent attacks on the Hindu community.

Catherine West, Under Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, responding to Gardiner, said she had been assured by the interim government in Bangladesh that minority communities there would be protected. In the meeting with Chief Advisor Yunus, I discussed bilateral issues, including the importance of protection of religious minorities in Bangladesh. The UK Government supports freedom of religion and freedom of expression in Bangladesh through both our political advocacy and development program funding.

MP Priti Patel said in the British Parliament, ‘I am deeply concerned by the terrible violence we have seen in Bangladesh and my thoughts are with those affected. In Parliament this afternoon I urged the Government to explain how they are negotiating with the Bangladeshi Government on this important issue. Strong action must be taken to protect life and prevent violence and persecution, including religious belief.

Secretary Catherine West said that the Government of Bangladesh had assured that special care would be taken for security during Durga Puja, the national festival for minority communities. Police will protect the pavilions and Hindu places of worship. But considering the current situation, the British government will hold talks with the interim government in Bangladesh, because many Hindus are being affected.
