New Delhi. There are many such evergreen films of Hindi cinema, which once the audience sees them, they can neither forget the story nor the songs of that film. In the year 1987, a film came which was called the first fictional film of Bollywood. This was the period when people gave a lot of love to ‘Baazigar’. But, in the same period, a film came which changed the entire trend of Bollywood. Not only the actors and actresses in the film, a cockroach also acted in such a manner that it also made headlines.
In today’s era, many things are easily possible on screen through animation. But, 37 years ago a film came in which the director made a cockroach act. The film we are referring to is ‘Mr. India’ released in 1987. In the film, lead hero was played by Anil Kapoor and lead actress was played by Sridevi. Amrish Puri had grabbed a lot of headlines by playing ‘Mukambo’ in the film.
How was the cockroach scene shot?
How director Shekhar Kapur shot this scene in the film. He had mentioned this during an interview. In a conversation with Daily Post, he recalled the shooting days of the film. Referring to the cockroach in the film, he had said that there was a scene in the film in which the cockroach chases Sridevi. He had to work hard for this scene.
When the idea of drinking clicked
Shekhar Kapur had told that everyone was struggling as to how to make the cockroach act like running after Sridevi. Everyone was busy in this endeavor. Then an idea came to the mind of the film’s cinematographer Baba Azmi and he shared it. Baba told Shekhar to make the cockroach drink alcohol, which will make him drunk. Shekhar Kapur liked this idea. Just what then. Both of them dropped some rum in front of the cockroach and after some time the cockroach actually drank a few drops of it. After a while the cockroach started getting really intoxicated. Then he started acting like running behind Sridevi and it became easy for the makers to do that scene. He mentioned that the cockroach liked alcohol and then he also acted as per his wish.
The characters also settled in people’s hearts
The characters of the film are still alive in the minds of the people, ‘Mogambo’, ‘Miss Hawa Hawai’, ‘Calendar’ and even today ‘Daga’ and ‘Teja’, who are considered the left and right hand of ‘Mogambo’, are remembered by the people. Remember till. This was Shekhar Kapur’s second film, which he directed. After this film, he became so popular that he started getting offers from Hollywood also.
The film’s writers Salim-Javed had written the story of this film in the year 1980 itself.
A lot of money at the box office
The budget of the film was kept around Rs 3 crore and the film earned Rs 5 crore in India and the worldwide collection of the film was Rs 10 crore. This film became the second highest grossing film at the box office in the year 1987. Before ‘Mr. India’, the film was ‘Hukumat’, which had the highest collection.
The story of the film was written in the year 1980 itself.
The film may have been released in 1987, but the film’s writers Salim-Javed had written the story of this film in the year 1980 itself. He had written this film keeping Amitabh Bachchan in mind, but when he narrated the story of the film to the actor, he refused the film due to his inability to appear on screen, after which Salim-Javed became very sad. After this, when Boney Kapoor heard his story, he liked the idea and decided to make the film.
