Phoenix: US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday said his administration may try to regain control of the Panama Canal which the US foolishly ceded to its Central American ally. Trump’s reasoning behind his statement was that ships are charged unnecessary fees to pass through this important canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. At the same time, Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino has rejected this notion outright, calling it an insult to his country’s sovereignty.

What is Trump going to do?

Republican Party’s newly elected President Trump made this comment in his first major rally after winning the election on November 5. Addressing supporters at ‘Turning Point USA AmericaFest’ in Arizona, Trump said his administration will rapidly grow the economy, seal the US borders and immediately end the wars in Middle East and Ukraine. Trump said, “I can proudly say that America’s golden age is before us.” There is a feeling within us now which was not there till some time ago.

Trump also commented about the Democratic Party

Trump said in his address, “We want to try to bring everyone together.” We are going to try. We’re really going to give it a chance.” He said Democratic Party leaders ”have lost their confidence and are confused after the election but they will eventually come to our side because we want them to come to our side. ”

America has built the canal

During this, Trump expressed his opinion on many new and old issues. In his address, he said, “We are being deprived of the Panama Canal.” He also said that America had “stupidly” handed it over to its Central American ally. This canal was initially constructed to facilitate the movement of commercial and military vessels between its banks.

increased fee

Washington handed over control of the waterway to Panama on December 31, 1999, under a treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. The canal is dependent on reservoirs and was significantly affected by a drought in 2023, which led to limits on the number of ships passing through it. Apart from this, the fee charged from boats was also increased. Transit on the canal has returned to normal as the weather moderates in the later months of this year but the increase in fees is expected to persist into next year.

Panama is an important ally of America

Panama is an important US ally and the canal is vital to its economy. The President of Panama has supported Trump from time to time on many issues. Trump said in his address that when his second term begins, if certain principles are not followed, he will demand the return of the Panama Canal to the United States completely, quickly and without any questions.

What did the President of Panama say?

After Trump’s address, Panamanian President Mulino released a video saying, “Every square meter of the canal belongs to Panama and will remain their country in the future.” Mulino said, “On many issues of the people of Panama, There may be different views, but we are all united when it comes to our canal and our sovereignty.” (AP)
