In his memoir book ‘Careless Peepal’, Sarah told how an Indian government Babu, who worked in an ordinary position, easily cheated Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his team’s highly paid engineers from a jugaad. Because of this, Facebook is facing regulatory investigation in India. Meta has tried several times to prevent this memoir of Sarah from being published.
Mark Zuckerberg and his team allegedly made aggressive efforts to save their controversial free basics program in India in 2016. For this, the company had also run a comprehensive email campaign, but due to the click of a government babu, this campaign of Facebook turned upside down.
Net neutrality
This memoir claimed that when India’s telecom regulator i.e. TRAI opened public consultation on it and asked if such programs should be banned? On this, Facebook created a full army of its engineers along with political impact to influence public opinion about net neutrality and free basics. It claimed that Facebook had allegedly planned a pressure campaign for this.
Referring to the then COO Sheryl Sandberg, the then COO of Facebook, Ven-Villiams said that he sent us an internal e-mail stating, “We are lucky that it is happening in the place where we have a lot of depth, there are senior relationships in the government but it is still difficult to be difficult.” Our policy team is directly associated with the government, which also includes PM Modi’s office.
All failed in front of jugaad
According to the book by Ven-Ciliums, Facebook’s strategy was to show public support through public automated e-mail. An ordinary government Babu’s ‘Jugaad’ could not include 16 million e-mails, ie 16 million e-mails supported by Indian users to TRAI. Because of this, the e-mail supported by the automated e-mail was excluded. Apart from this, many more revelations have been made about Meta in this book.
However, META has rejected the book as “old and pre -reported”. A company spokesperson said that 8 years ago Sarah Wayne-Viliums were expelled from the company due to poor performance. However, Facebook’s free basics were eventually banned in India due to violating net neutrality principles, which could be called a rare necklace for Zuckerberg’s global expansion ambitions.
