Amidst the excitement of Delhi Assembly elections (Delhi Elections 2025), questions are being raised regarding the existence of INDIA, the alliance of opposition parties. The leaders who formed this alliance have started talking about ending it. After RJD leaders Tejashwi Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal, Omar Abdullah, Akhilesh Yadav and Uddhav Thackeray, now Sharad Pawar has also joined this list. Sharad Pawar made it clear on Tuesday that the alliance of opposition parties was formed for the INDIA national level elections. This has no meaning in assembly elections. Sharad Pawar said that there was never any discussion in the INDIA alliance for local elections and state elections.
During the press conference in Mumbai, Sharad Pawar said, “There was never any talk about state and local elections in the INDIA Alliance. The alliance was for the national level elections i.e. Lok Sabha elections. All the parties of the alliance are ready for the coming 10 days. Will clear the situation regarding local elections inside.”
Earlier, Sharad Pawar’s MP daughter Supriya Sule also said that parties have been fighting local elections alone. Supriya Sule said, “Local elections are actually for the party workers. If the alliance contests such elections, what will the cadre do? Will they just pick up the mattresses of the leaders?”

Opposition parties had come together with the aim of defeating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. Its foundation was laid in Bengaluru on 18 July 2023. It was named INDIA. INDIA means Indian National Development Inclusive Alliance. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was made the president of the alliance. Leadership had to be decided, which has not been done till now.

How was the performance of INDIA Alliance in the Lok Sabha elections 2024?
In the Lok Sabha elections 2024, out of total 543 seats, BJP contested alone on 441 seats. The remaining seats were given to NDA allies. Whereas INDIA Alliance fielded candidates simultaneously on 466 seats. INDIA Alliance won 234 seats. NDA won 293 seats. Congress led the alliance. It won 99 seats. SP won 37 seats, TMC 29 and DMK 22 seats.

In recent times, many leaders have given statements regarding ending the INDIA Alliance.
-On January 7, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said- “The main objective of INDIA alliance was limited to defeating BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.”
-On January 8, Arvind Kejriwal said, “INDIA Alliance has no business in Delhi elections. This election belongs to AAP and BJP.”
-On January 9, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said- “The opposition is not united, hence the INDIA block should be dissolved.
-On January 10, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said- “Now that INDIA block does not exist, Congress should announce, we will choose our own paths.”
