Why change in H-1B policy will be beneficial for America, American economist told NDTV in Davos

Davos/New Delhi:

American economist Kenneth Rogoff told NDTV at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos that the change in H-1B visa policy for high-skilled professionals from India would be great for America during the Trump 2.0 tenure. , because he needs them. Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, who works closely with US President Trump, is also in favor of H-1B visa. Referring to the problem of India’s brain drain, Rogoff told NDTV that I think it will be great for America. I don’t know whether it is great for India or not.

A more relaxed policy should be adopted

Kenneth Rogoff said that you know this, Joe Biden seemed to follow Trump’s policy on legal immigration, he did not relax it at all. Therefore, we should adopt a much more relaxed policy for the higher educated, who have a lot to contribute. After Trump, Joe Biden took over as US President in January 2021. “I’m not saying there aren’t people who have less education who don’t have a lot to contribute, but all of this legal immigration needs to be in some logical system,” Rogoff said.

Trump made these important announcements

On the first day of his second term, President Trump made several important announcements, including pardoning 1,500 people involved in the US Capitol violence in January 2021 and deporting millions of foreigners back to their countries. The Democrats did a lot of legal stuff during his tenure, and I think he’s rolling back some of it. Those who do PhD get an offer from a university or a great job, they can’t stay because they can’t get a green card. People cross the Mexican border illegally, and at least nine million do so. In his first term, Trump cut both. However, Elon Musk is explaining to them that we need talented engineers from India and elsewhere. That’s why there is a crisis on the southern border. This was the strangest policy of Joe Biden. Trump is not going to stop immigration. Actually the border is very big.

identity politics

On Trump’s announcement that he recognizes only two genders. On this, Rogoff said that this is a step backward and we have gone to extremes. I think the majority of Americans support transgender rights. But it was taken to such an extreme that they could not do it. Therefore, efforts are being made to find a middle path. I don’t know what he’s really going to do. I don’t think you can turn back time. But, you know, obviously he’s saying things that hurt a lot of people. You know, this is not welcome.
