Why has political disputes on ammonia in Delhi, how harmful this chemical is for humans

New Delhi:

Assembly elections are being held in Delhi. Meanwhile, the political parties of Delhi are fighting over the water of Yamuna. The matter has reached here that the Aam Aadmi Party running the government in Delhi is accusing Haryana of adding poison in Yamuna. The BJP government of Haryana was accused by Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal. He wrote on the social media site X on 27 January that the country had not seen such dirty politics till date. If the people of Delhi are not voting for the BJP, will the people of Delhi get poisoned and killed water? The BJP government there is sending poison in the water coming from Haryana. I want to tell the people of Delhi that as long as Kejriwal is, I will not let the Delhiites be harmed. Kejriwal has been the Chief Minister of Delhi. In this way, BJP and Congress reacted sharply to their statement of poisoning Yamuna water. A case has been filed against Kejriwal in Delhi.

The Election Commission has also taken cognizance of Kejriwal’s allegations. On this, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met the Election Commission officials. During this time, these two leaders said that the government of Haryana is deliberately releasing a dangerous amount of ammonia in the Yamuna water, so that the water supply in Delhi can be endangered.

What is pollution of ammonia in water

The Aam Aadmi Party is accusing the Haryana government of leaving ammonia in Yamuna, in such a situation it is important to know what ammonia is and how it becomes dangerous in water. Ammonia is a colorless and strong odor gas that causes pollution. It easily dissolves in water. It is used extensively in industrial chemicals. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), ammonia is also used in chemical fertilizer, coolant, stain removal, fodder for animals, plastic and paper making.

After using chemical energy in the farm, water came out there, garbage coming out of industries using ammonia, sewer is its main source. According to the Department of Health and Human Services of America, it can harm the organs by prolonged use. However, there is no evidence that drinking more ammonia causes cancer.

How Yamuna is polluted

There are many dye factories, liquor factories in Sonepat and Panipat districts of Haryana. The dirty water coming out of these is found in the Yamuna. Apart from these, sewer water of colonies is also found in Yamuna, due to which pollution is spread in it. Only after here, Yumna enters Delhi near Wazirabad. The result of this is that in Delhi it is more pollution than accepted levels of pollution. In many places in Delhi, the amount of its water designed oxygen has been found to be zero, while its acceptable amount is 5 mg/liter or more. The level of pollution in the Yamuna increases further when the water goes into it comes down, especially in the summer and winter season.

The water purification plants are able to clean the same water only in which the amount of ammonia is less than one part per million (PPM). This does not allow water with more ammonia. In such a situation, water supply in Delhi is affected due to increase in the level of ammonia in Yamuna.

Amonia water cleaning

The water purification plant of Delhi Jal Board uses chlorine to make the water with ammonia clean. Eight to 12 milligrams of chlorine are required to clean one mg per liter of water of ammonia. After extracting ammonia from the applied water, there should be some quantity of chlorine in the water to kill the germs present in it. When the amount of ammonia in the water increases, the water treatment plant’s ability to function is reduced.
