Why is there a ruckus on Manusmriti and Babarnama in Delhi University, know the whole matter?

There is a dispute once again in Delhi University. The matter is about a change in the syllabus, in which students and teachers have protested against the discussion of inclusion of historical texts like Manusmriti and Babarnama. Significantly, some departments of DU have proposed to teach these books in the graduation course.

The Department of History and Philosophy of DU suggested the inclusion of Manusmriti and Babarnama under the change in its graduate curriculum. According to the proposal, Manusmriti was to be taught for the study of Indian philosophy and social system, while Babarnama was proposed to understand medieval history and Mughal rule. The university administration argued that these texts would help students understand the cultural, social and political mobility of ancient and medieval India. The proposal of the university has been opposed by a large section of student organizations and teacher community.

What is the dispute over Manusmriti?
Manusmriti, also known as Manu Samhita, is an ancient Hindu book that defines social system, duties and laws. Its biggest criticism has been about its varna system and attitude towards women. It was publicly burnt by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar in 1927, it has been described as “a symbol of casteism and oppression”.

Students protesting say that this book is against the inclusive and egalitarian values ​​of modern India. On the other hand, supporters argue that Manusmriti should be taught in its historical context and not weighed to the test of modern morality.

Why is there a dispute over Babarnama?
Babarnama, the autobiography of Mughal Emperor Babur, is considered an important document in the history of medieval India. It has detailed information about Babur’s life, wars and governance. However, there is a dispute over the proposal to include it in the syllabus. However, its supporters say that Babarnama should be seen only as the diary of a ruler, not from a religious or communal perspective. But opponents say that at a time when the issue of Ayodhya dispute and Babri Masjid is still fresh in the memory of people, teaching Babarnama can integrate communal tension.

Along with students, teachers are also protesting
A section of teachers is also divided on this issue. Delhi University Teachers Association (Duta) issued a statement saying, “Discussions from all parties are necessary before the change in the syllabus. The decisions taken in haste can damage the credibility of the university.” The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have accused the BJP of “saffronisation of education”.

What does the university say?
The DU administration has not yet taken a final decision on this proposal. There will be a detailed discussion on this issue in the next meeting of the university’s Academic Council. Till then there is no possibility of stopping this dispute. Students say that they will continue their opposition until their demands are met.
