PM Modi’s Mauritius Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for New Delhi on Wednesday after a two -day visit by Mauritius. Signed agreements include promoting the use of national currencies for border cross transactions, sharing sea data, joint work in dealing with money laundering and increasing cooperation in MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).

After talks with Mauritius’s own counterpart Naveen Chandra Ramgulam, PM Modi announced India’s new view for ‘Global South’ and named it “Ocean” or “Mutual End Holistic Administration for Security for Security and Growth across the Regents). This policy approach has come under the backdrop of China’s tireless efforts to expand its influence in the Indian Ocean.
2. Modi said that an independent, free, safe and protected Indian Ocean is a common priority of India and Mauritius. Discussing strategic cooperation between the two countries, PM Modi said that Mauritius will be provided all possible help in meeting the needs of its Coast Guard and India will assist in establishing a Police Academy and National Maritime Information sharing center in the country. He said, “White shipping, cooperation on blue economy and hydrology will be strengthened. We fully respect Mauritius ‘sovereignty in the context of Chagos Islands dispute.’
6. After liberating Mauritius in the year 1965, Britain separated the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean from Mauritius. However, Mauritius still asserts its authority over this island.
7. India has been supporting Mauritius’s efforts to reach a mutually beneficial agreement with Britain on the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean.
8. In October last year, Britain announced its decision to hand over the sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius after more than half a century under a historic agreement.
9. Under the agreement, during the tenure of former Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jagannath, Britain will renounce its sovereignty on the archipelago, but will maintain a 99-year lease over the British-America military airbase on Diego Garcia, the biggest island.
10. However, the new government of Mauritius, led by Ramgulam, demanded a re -starting talks with Britain on the Chagos Islands and demanded a re -consumption to consider the agreement.
11. In his address, Modi said that he and Ramgulam have decided to give it the status of an extended strategic partnership “by giving” extending the India-Meritus relations. He said, “We are partners of each other on the path of economic and social progress. Whether it is a natural disaster or a Kovid-19 epidemic disaster, we have always supported each other.
12. The Prime Minister said, “Be it defense or education, health or space, we are walking shoulder to shoulder in every field. In the last 10 years, we have added many new dimensions to our relationship. We have set new records in development cooperation and efficiency development. ”
13. The Prime Minister also announced several development projects to be implemented in Mauritius with the help of India. He said that the work of modernization of 100 km long water pipeline will be done. The Prime Minister said that in the second phase of community development projects, new projects worth Rs 50 crore Mauritius will be started. We have also agreed to do mutual business in local currencies. He also referred to various projects aided from India in Mauritius, including “Metro Express for speed in Mauritius, Supreme Court Building for Justice, Social Housing for Better Housing, ENT Hospitals for Good Health, ENT Hospitals, ‘UPI’ (Unified Payment Interface) and RuPay cards to promote business and tourism.
14. Modi and Ramgulam also dedicated “Atal Bihari Vajpayee Public Service and Innovation Institute” to Mauritius. The Prime Minister also talked about mutual relations between the people of both countries. Modi said, “We will work together for the use of AI (artificial intelligence) and DPI, which is a digital public infrastructure in human development.” Facilities will be provided for the people of Mauritius for Char Dham Yatra and Ramayana Yatra in India. ”
15. India has close and long -term relations with the island nation Mauritius located in the Western Indian Ocean. One of the main reasons for special relations is the fact that about 70 percent of the population of 12 lakhs of this island country is people of Indian origin. India has been one of the largest trading partners in Mauritius since 2005.
