The World Chess Championship final will start from today i.e. 25th November. The championship is being held at the Aquarium Hotel in World Sentosa, Singapore. The final match will be played between current world champion Ding Liren and Gukesh of India.
Singapore won the auction to host the match for Rs 20.86 crore (US$2.5 million). FIDE had received 3 applications to host the World Championship match. Of these, two were from India and one from Singapore. The Government of India had applied for New Delhi and the Government of Tamil Nadu for Chennai for hosting. Taking advantage of this, Singapore won the bidding.
There will be 14 rounds in the match There will be 14 rounds in the final, with tiebreakers if necessary. Gukesh and Ding will get 1 point for winning a game and 0.5 points for a draw. 7.5 points will be needed to win the championship. If the score remains tied after 14 rounds, the winner will be declared through tiebreakers with faster time control. This is the first time in the history of the World Chess Championship that two Asian players are competing against each other to become the world champion.
Eyes on Gukesh, if he wins he will become world champion In this match, all eyes will be on young D Gukesh, if he succeeds in defeating world champion Ding Liren of China, he will become world champion. He will become the second Indian to do so. Vishwanathan Anand has become a 5-time world champion.
Youngest player to win Candidates Chess 17-year-old Gukesh had won the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto last April. He became the youngest player to do so. Before Gukesh, Russian player Garry Kasparov had won this tournament at the youngest age of 22 in 1984.
Second Indian to win Gukesh Candidates Tournament Gukesh is the second Indian to win this tournament. Before him, five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand had won the Candidates Tournament for the first time in 1995. Then his age was 26 years.
Gukesh said after the victory, ‘I feel very happy. I did a lot of preparation together with my colleague Grigory Gajevski. This helped.
Team members who won silver in Asian Games Gukesh had won the silver medal in the Hangzhou Asian Games in China last year. In 2015, Gukesh became a Candidate Master by winning the Under-9 title in the Asian School Chess Championship. Gukesh has won 5 Gold Asian Youth Championships so far. In 2019, he became India’s youngest and the world’s second youngest Grandmaster.
Who is D Gukesh? Gukesh D’s full name is Domaraju Gukesh and he is a resident of Chennai. Gukesh was born on 7 May 2006 in Chennai. He started playing chess at the age of 7. He was initially coached by Bhaskar Nagaiah.
Nagaiah has been an international level chess player and is a home chess tutor in Chennai. After this, Vishwanathan Anand gave coaching to Gukesh along with giving him information about the game. Gukesh’s father is a doctor and mother is a microbiologist by profession.
