World Year Ender 2024: The year 2024 will also be known for general elections in the world’s largest democratic countries like India, America, Britain, Russia, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh. India

Lok Sabha elections were held from April to June in India, which is called the world’s largest democracy. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by PM Modi won this election. NDA secured 303 seats, out of 272 seats required for majority. BJP alone won 240 seats. Thus Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister of India for the third consecutive time. America

Presidential elections were held on 5 November in America, the world’s oldest democracy. Republican Party candidate Donald Trump was elected President of America for the second time. He registered a historic victory in the 2024 presidential election and defeated his rival and Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris by a large margin in all seven swing states. Now he will take oath as the new 47th President of America on January 20.

Russia

Vladimir Putin was elected President of Russia for the 5th time in April 2024 amid the war with Ukraine. He has been in power continuously since 2024. Putin has become the President of Russia for the next 6 years. That means he will remain in power in Russia till 2030. This time he got more than 87 percent votes.

After 14 years, the Labor Party won the general election for 650 seats in Britain on 4 July 2024. The right-wing Conservative Party of then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak suffered a heavy defeat. The Labor Party created history by winning about 410 seats and Keir Starmer became the new Prime Minister of Britain.

South Africa

National Assembly elections were held here on 29 May 2024. Here the ruling African National Congress remained the largest party, but its support declined significantly. Hence the party lost its majority in Parliament.

Japan

General elections were held in Japan on 27 October 2024. In this, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) did not get majority. The ruling coalition won 215 seats, falling 18 seats short of the majority. The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party got 148 seats. It suffered a loss of 50 seats compared to the last election.

France

General elections were also held in France in July 2024. No party could get a clear majority in the elections held for 577 seats here. The leftist New Popular Front alliance achieved great success in this election and won 188 seats. Whereas President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance could get only 161 seats. While the right-wing National Rally stood third with 141 seats. No party could cross the mark of 289 for majority.

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had a big victory in the elections held in Bangladesh in January 2024. He won 222 seats in the 300-seat assembly. While independent leaders won 66 seats. The main opposition Khalid Zia’s party BNP boycotted the elections. In this way Sheikh Hasina became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for the 5th time, but in August 2024, the students’ movement in Bangladesh ousted her from power.

General elections were held in Pakistan on 8 February 2024. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML) won 75 seats in the 336-member Pakistan Assembly. Bilawal Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 54 seats. Whereas former Prime Minister Imran Khan was not allowed to contest elections. The situation reached such a stage that his supporters had to contest the elections as independents. He won 100 seats. PML-N alliance formed government for the second time. Nawaz Sharif’s brother Shahbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second time.

sri lanka elections

Presidential elections were held in Sri Lanka on 21 September 2024. In this, leftist leader Anura Kumar Dissanayake got a huge victory. He secured more than 50 percent of the votes. While the then President Ranil Vikram Singhe stood third. While opposition leader Sajith Premadasa stood second. After this, in the parliamentary elections also, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s party National People’s Power (NPP) achieved majority by winning 123 seats in the 225-member Parliament.
