Referring to the old Pamban Railway Bridge, which was operational since 1914, Ashwini Vaishnav said that it was closed in December 2022 due to rust. He said, “The Old Pamban Rail Bridge, built in 1914, connected Pamban Island to Rameshwaram for 105 years. It was closed in December 2022 due to rust. Now the new bridge symbolizes a new era of connectivity.”
The train will run at a speed of 80 kilometers per hour on this bridge. Two railway tracks have been laid on this bridge. When there is no train traffic, the bridge slab can be raised and ships can move from below. OHE i.e. Over Head Equipment has been successfully tested on the new Pamban Bridge. 3/ 🔄Century apart!
How the new Pamban bridge is different from the old one.
🚆Old Bridge (1914):
➡️Manual Scherzer rolling lift span for ship passage. 2 workers at each side to lift using levers.
➡️Air clearance: 19m above sea level.
➡️Single track

In another post, the Railway Minister has made a comparison between the old and new bridges. He said the manual shear lift in the old bridge was limited to low-speed trains with span, single track and air clearance of 19 metres. While the automated vertical lift span of 22-meter in the new bridge also provides safe exit. Also supports its double track and electrification. It has been specially designed for high-speed trains.
The Railway Minister said, “This bridge is expected to be inaugurated soon. Trains will now run on this sea bridge, showing the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mannar.”
