Assam by-election: Who won on all 5 seats, know the result of each seat

Counting of votes (Assam By Election Result 2024) is going on in five assembly seats amid tight security in Assam. BJP has won 3 assembly seats in the state. Nihar Ranjan Das of BJP has won from Dholai, whereas Nirmal Kumar Bahama of UPP,L has won from Sidley.

Result of by-elections on 5 seats of Assam

Five seats in Assam became vacant after five MLAs, including a cabinet minister, were elected to the Lok Sabha. These include two MLAs from the ruling BJP, including a cabinet minister, one MLA each from alliance partners Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and one MLA from the opposition Congress.

Former BJP cabinet minister Parimal Suklabaidya successfully contested from Silchar Lok Sabha seat and his previous assembly seat Dholai became vacant. Meanwhile, another senior BJP leader Ranjit Dutta was elected to the lower house of Parliament. He was representing Behali seat in the assembly.

This time, AGP had registered its presence in Parliament for the first time. When its senior leader Phani Bhushan Chaudhary was elected from Barpeta Lok Sabha seat. The party had contested the elections in two parliamentary constituencies in the state, however, he lost to Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain in Dhubri. Choudhary had been MLA from Bongaigaon assembly constituency six times. When AGP fielded him from Barpeta Lok Sabha seat to contest the parliamentary elections, Choudhary’s supporters had protested against the party’s decision and urged Choudhary to remain the MLA of Bongaigaon.

Congress leader Rakibul Hussain had defeated three-time AIUDF MP and party chief Badruddin Ajmal from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat by a margin of over 10 lakh votes, cementing his position as a five-time MLA from the Samguri assembly seat.

BJP contested elections on 3 seats

Meanwhile, former Sidley MLA, UPPL’s ​​Joyanta Basumatary also made headlines by securing the Kokrajhar seat. BJP contested by-elections on three assembly seats – Dholai, Samaguri and Behali. Diplu Ranjan Sarma was given ticket in Samaguri, while Diganta Ghatowar and Nihar Ranjan Das are fighting for BJP in Behali and Dholai assembly constituencies respectively.

Assam Gana Parishad (AGP), two allies of the ruling party, contested the by-election in Bongaigaon assembly constituency, while United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) fielded its candidate from Sidli seat. On the other hand, Congress party fielded its candidates on all five assembly seats.
