Bank accounts of 17 people associated with ISKCON including Chinmay Krishna Das frozen in Bangladesh

Local media in Dhaka reported on Friday that ‘Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit’ (BFIU) has ordered to freeze the bank accounts of 17 individuals associated with ISKCON Bangladesh for 30 days. Its jailed leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari is also included in this. Reports have revealed that government instructions have been sent to many banks and financial institutions in the country to suspend all transactions from the accounts for a month.

Das was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Monday and sent to jail a day later. Apart from Das, the other 16 Hindus targeted by the Bangladesh government include Karthik Chandra Dey, Anik Pal, Saroj Roy, Sushant Das, Vishwa Kumar Singha, Chandidas Bala, Jaydev Karmakar, Lipi Rani Karmakar, Sudhama Gaur Das, Laxman Kanti Das, Priyatosh Das. , Rupan Das, Rupan Kumar Dhar, Ashish Purohit, Jagdish Chandra Adhikari and Sajal Das.

Information sought in three days

According to a report in Prothom Alo, a leading Bengali newspaper of Bangladesh, “The BFIU letter states that under the powers conferred by Section 23(1)(c) of the ‘Prevention of Money Laundering Act-2012’, ISKCON and its related parties and All transactions in accounts held in the name of entities owned by them (except accounts of import and export companies) have been ordered to be suspended for 30 days. “Account related information like account opening form, KYC form, up-to-date transaction details etc. have been asked to be sent within the next three working days.”

Sanatan Jagran Jot spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das has been charged with treason by Bangladeshi authorities for allegedly insulting the country’s flag by hoisting the saffron flag in Chittagong last month. Das was produced in a Chittagong court on Tuesday and later sent to jail after Bangladeshi Hindus took to the streets in the country. At the same time, violence broke out in the court building, resulting in the death of 32-year-old advocate Saiful Islam Alif. Hardliners in Bangladesh are now blaming Das’s supporters for the advocate’s death, while ISKCON and other Hindu organizations have made it clear that no Hindu was involved in the disturbance that day in the court complex.
