These 5 devices can help you in diabetes management (blood sugar monitoring device)

1. Blood Glucose Meter and Test Strips

A common way to measure blood sugar is with a blood glucose meter and test strips. If you want to check blood sugar in this way, then you have to prick a thin pin on the tip of your finger and take out light blood. Now one drop of blood has to be placed on a test strip in the meter. The meter displays your blood sugar level on the screen.

The finger stick check measures blood sugar only once. In such a situation, people with diabetes, especially those taking insulin, have to use this tool several times a day to keep their blood sugar levels regular.

2. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM)

A sensor placed under the skin measures your glucose levels 24 hours a day, called a continuous glucose monitoring device (CGM). CGM is more useful for people whose blood sugar levels fluctuate frequently. This is a small device that is inserted under the skin, usually in the arm or abdomen. The sensor measures the current level of glucose in the fluid between the cells, which is similar to the level in your blood. This sensor sends the data to the receiver or monitor. The monitor can be a smartphone, watch, or insulin pump.

3. Insulin Pen

The smart pen is designed to be easy to use for patients. Once you’ve downloaded the app to your smartphone and paired it with your pen, you’re ready to use. The device sends real-time data to the app via Bluetooth connection. It is very easy to use, but it does not always remain attached to your body. By inserting it in the body as per requirement, you can get information related to your insulin dosage and blood sugar level.

4. Insulin Pump

The insulin pump is inserted into the device body, and it is attached to a monitor that shows the exact measurement on the screen. The insulin pump releases insulin in much the same way as your body releases it naturally. A steady flow throughout the day and night, called basal insulin, and an extra dose at mealtime, called a bolus, to help handle the rising blood sugar from the food you eat.

You program the pump for both basal and bolus dosing. If you eat more than usual, you can program a larger bolus to cover the carbohydrates in your meal. The bolus also reduces high blood sugar at other times.

The pump is the size of a smartphone. It is attached to the body using an infusion set. Thin plastic tubing, either a needle or a small thin tube called a cannula, that you insert under the skin. It is usually inserted into the abdomen, buttocks, or sometimes the thigh, these places are called infusion sites.

5. Smartwatch

Before we discuss any models, it is important to understand that no smartwatch can measure blood sugar levels accurately until 2024. There are many smartwatches that can be used for diabetes management when combined with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and other health-tracking features.

But if you are monitoring blood sugar only through watch, then its measurement is not completely accurate. If you are pre-diabetic, or are ever in a hurry, cannot use other devices, then in that case smart watch can be used. This can help you get an approximate measurement of your blood sugar level.
