‘Do you know what a lollipop is?’, Basit Ali warns PCB through gestures

Basit Ali, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has expressed concern over the possibility of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) accepting the reported deal with the International Cricket Council (ICC), calling it a ‘lollipop’ that will ultimately harm Pakistan cricket. Basit’s comments come amid ongoing discussions regarding hosting rights and financial compensation related to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and 2026 T20 World Cup. The ICC and PCB have reportedly agreed to a hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will allow India to play their matches in Dubai instead of Pakistan. The decision, driven by political tension, has sparked debate over the revenue loss for the PCB as the premier India-Pakistan match, a major source of revenue, will not be held on Pakistani soil.

Under the agreement, Pakistan will also not travel to India for its league-stage matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Instead, this match will be played in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It should be noted that India and Sri Lanka are the joint hosts for the 2026 T20 World Cup. In return, the ICC has promised to give hosting rights to Pakistan for the Women’s World Cup after 2027. In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Basit Ali criticized the PCB for accepting the deal, saying it would not bring much benefit to Pakistan cricket. He urged the board to push for hosting the Men’s Asia Cup, stressing the economic and cricketing importance of hosting a high-profile men’s tournament.

Basit said, “Now it is being said that in 2027 or 2028, the Women’s World Cup will be given to Pakistan. Everyone will say, ‘Wow! It’s great, not one but two ICC events (in Pakistan)!’ But what do such events mean? This is being done so that the Pakistan team comes to India in 2026 and then the Indian women’s team comes to Pakistan. There will be no loss to the broadcasters.”

“Do you know what a lollipop is? This is the lollipop that the ICC is giving to the PCB…that if you agree to this, do not ask for anything in writing and we will give you another ICC event. This ( There will be no benefit to Pakistan by bidding for the Asia Cup or the Under-19 World Cup. If If the PCB accepts this lollipop, they will lose.”

Basit also highlighted how this arrangement could set a precedent for more agreements in the future, such as the Pakistan men’s team traveling to India for the tournament and vice versa, thereby avoiding revenue loss for broadcasters. Read. Although the PCB is yet to officially confirm the details, sources say that the board is under pressure to accept the hybrid model to run the Champions Trophy smoothly. The ICC’s refusal to provide financial compensation for revenue loss from India-Pakistan matches has made the deal even more controversial.
