Cooch Behar Trophy: Bihar Under-19 team celebrating at Moinul Haq Stadium in Patna. They rarely get this opportunity. 18 year old left arm all rounder Suman Kumar has added a new record to the glory of Bihar Cricket by taking 10 wickets in the innings. Bihari ‘Jaddu’, a resident of Samastipur, spent only 30 runs in 33 overs with 20 maidens and took all 10 wickets in the Cooch Behar Trophy match against Rajasthan.
Speaking to NDTV on phone, Suman Kumar said, ‘Sir, this is my biggest day so far. My heroes are Ravindra Jadeja and Anukul Bhaiya (Anukul Rai, KKR player). Like many other cricketers till now, I have also struggled. But coach Brajesh Jha sir, coach Rahmatullah sir and coach Sanjay sir are continuously teaching me.
Coach Sanjay says, ‘The feat of taking 10 wickets in an innings has been achieved very rarely in the history of cricket. Suman also took a hat-trick during this period and once created a chance for a hat-trick. The world knows about Jim Laker and Anil Kumble sir in Test cricket. It is amazing that in the same season, two Indian players took 10 wickets in an innings (Bihar’s Suman and Haryana’s pacer Anshul Kamboj in the Ranji Trophy match against Kerala).
Suman says, ‘I dream of becoming like Ravindra Jadeja. I want to become an all-rounder like him. In the last 5-7 years, I have worked hard by going to the cricket academy of Jamshedpur (K Nirmal Mahato Academy), Samastipur. There were also difficulties in getting food and water there. Rice and dal like home was not available. But never mind.
Coach Sanjay says, ‘Suman is a special talent. Whatever task the coach gives him, he does it with full dedication. When we make him spot bowl by making a 1 foot square marker on the pitch, he definitely bowls 95-97 balls out of 100 in that area.
Bihar’s Under-19 team is celebrating Suman’s success together after the match against Rajasthan. The cake is being cut. The team started by collecting money among themselves and offering a reward of Rs 1000 to Suman. Coach Sanjay says that the process of celebration has just begun.
Bihar Cricket Association President Rakesh Kumar Tiwari is very happy because of the success of Vaibhav Suryavanshi and now Suman Kumar in IPL. He says, ‘The success of Bihar cricket is going to accelerate now. This month we are also going to make a big announcement regarding Bihar cricket. We will also honor Suman and encourage her.
Coach Sanjay also tells that although the pitch of Moinul Haq Stadium is a flat wicket, Suman took full advantage of the morning humidity and achieved the feat. He feels that Suman is a big league player and one day he will definitely make himself and Bihar famous.
