Famous filmmaker Pritish Nandy dies of heart attack: Made films like Chameli, Sur, was also a Rajya Sabha MP; Anupam Kher said – was a friend of friends

Famous filmmaker and journalist Pritish Nandy died of a heart attack on Wednesday. He was 73 years old and was suffering from pancreatic cancer. Anupam Kher posted on X and informed about his demise. He had produced films like Chameli, Sur and Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi.

Pritish Nandy was born on 15 January 1951 in Bhagalpur, Bihar. He was the editor of ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’ and was famous for his bold views. He also made his mark in film production and made 24 Hindi-English films.

Nandy was a Shiv Sena MP in the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra between 1998 and 2004. Nandi had written more than 40 books of poems in English. He translated poems from Bengali, Urdu and Punjabi into English.

Apart from Hindi and English, Pritish also knew Bengali, Punjabi and Urdu languages. He translated many books into English.

Anupam Kher wrote- Pritish was my support system in the initial days. Anupam Kher wrote on Instagram- I am extremely sad and shocked to hear that one of my dearest and closest friends, Pritish Nandy, has passed away. He was a wonderful poet, writer, filmmaker and brave unique journalist. He was my support system and a big source of strength during my initial days in Mumbai.

The actor further wrote, ‘There were many things in common between us. He was one of the most fearless humans I have ever met. He was always a person with a big heart and big dreams. I learned a lot from him. In recent times, our meetings had become less frequent, but there was a time when we were almost inseparable. I never forget the moment when he surprised me by giving me a place on the cover of Filmfare and most importantly, The Illustrated Weekly. He was truly a ‘friend of friends’.

Sudhir Mishra said- Nandi was being called the next Tagore. Film director Sudhir Mishra said- I am not able to understand the news of Pritish’s demise. He changed my life. He understood my film ‘Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi’ and as a producer gave me the freedom to make it the way I wanted.

Started talk show in 1990 Pritish Nandy hosted a talk show named ‘The Pritish Nandy Show’ on Doordarshan in the 1990s. In this show he interviewed celebrities. He made his mark as a poet and writer with the book Gods and Olives.

Made movies like Sur, Chameli, Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi He had produced many films in the early 2000s under his banner Pritish Nandy Communications like ‘Sur’, ‘Kaante’, ‘Jhankar Beats’, ‘Chameli’, ‘Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi’, ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’. Last time as a producer, he produced Amazon Prime Video’s web series ‘Four More Shots Please’ and the anthology series ‘Modern Love Mumbai’.
