Many cities of India are suffocating due to increasing pollution. The situation is such that in 2024, 13 cities of India were included in the 20 most polluted cities in the world. It has been claimed that the World Air Quality Report of Switzerland’s Air Quality Technology Company ‘IQAR’ in 2024. According to this report, Bernihat in Meghalaya is the most polluted city. Along with this, Delhi remains the most polluted capital globally. India has become the 5th most polluted country in the world in 2024, which was third in 2023.
It has been reported in this report that in India in 2024, there has been a decrease of 7 percent in the concentration of PM 2.5 (smaller pollution particle than 2.5 μm), which declined from 54.4 micrograms per cubic meter to 50.6 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023. Despite this, the PM 2.5 level in 35 percent of the cities of the country is 10 times the limit of the World Health Organization (WHO) than 5 micrograms per cubic meter. The situation in Delhi is even more serious, where the annual average PM 2.5 concentrations increased from 102.4 micrograms per cubic meter in 2023 to 108.3 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024.

The top 20 most polluted cities include India from Bernihat (Meghalaya), Delhi, Mullanpur (Punjab), Faridabad, Gurugram (Haryana), Loni, Noida, Greater Noida, Muzaffarnagar (Uttar Pradesh), Ganganagar, Bhiwadi, and Hanumangarh (Rajasthan). The high levels of pollution in Bernihat are due to local factories, such as alcohol manufacturing, iron and emissions from steel plants. Four cities of Pakistan and one city in China are also on this list in neighboring countries.
This report is a warning for India that immediate and effective steps need to be taken to control air pollution. Experts believe that the situation is difficult to improve without strict control over sources such as industrial emissions, vehicles smoke and stubble burning.

Serious effects on health
Air pollution remains a major health risk in India.
