General Upendra Dwivedi becomes Army Chief of Nepal, know what is this unique tradition

New Delhi. Relations between India and Nepal are centuries old and strong. Both countries share land borders. India is like a gateway to the neighboring country Nepal. It is India through which Nepal connects with the world. Apart from this, there are many unique traditions between the two countries, one of which is appointing the Indian Army Chief as the Honorary Army Chief of Nepal. You may find this strange to hear, but it is absolutely true. Gurkhas of Nepal in the Indian Army also fight against the enemies and that too with full dedication. Not only this, neighboring countries also give the same respect to the Indian Army as is given to the soldiers of India. Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has reached Kathmandu on a 4-day visit to Nepal. On this occasion, Nepal President Ramchandra Paudel has appointed him as the Chief of Nepali Army.

This is the first visit of General Upendra Dwivedi to Nepal as Army Chief. After reaching Kathmandu, Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel appointed General Dwivedi as the Honorary Chief of the Nepalese Army. During this, the appointment letter was also handed over to him in a function. You will definitely be surprised to hear that why the Indian Army Chief has been given the title of Army Chief of Nepal? The interesting thing is that Indians are not even in Nepal’s army. Despite this why so? You will be shocked to know the answer to this question. This is not the first time. In fact, whoever becomes the new chief of the Indian Army is awarded the honorary title of Chief of the Nepalese Army by the Government of Nepal. Exactly the same thing happens with the Army Chief of Nepal in India also.

Nepal’s Army Chief also gets equal respect
India also confers the honorary title of Indian Army Chief on the Army Chief of the neighboring country Nepal. Nepal’s Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel is going to visit India next month. During that time, Supreme Commander President Draupadi Murmu will confer him the honorary title of Chief of the Indian Army.

When did this practice start?
This practice started in the year 1950 and continues even today. This tradition shows the strength of the relationship between the two countries and especially the military relationship. It has happened many times that relations between India and Nepal turned sour, but this practice never stopped. After this honorary title, the Army Chief gets the same protocol which is given to the Army Chief of his country. Every three years, as soon as the tenure of the Army Chief ends and a new Army Chief is appointed, he is given this honor on his first visit. This honor is given by the President in a ceremony organized at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

unique honor
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi was also honored with this honor at the investiture ceremony at Sheetal Niwas, in which he was given a baton, sword and the cap of the Nepali Army Chief. However, this is an honorary title, an honor and it does not give the Indian Army any control over the Nepali Army.
