Olympic medalist hockey captain Harmanpreet will receive Khel Ratna: 30 players will be given Arjun Award, 13 of them are Paralympians.

Indian hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh will be awarded the Khel Ratna Award. Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet, the Indian hockey team won the bronze medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. Apart from him, a para athlete will also be given Khel Ratna. Subhash Rana, who won 4 medals in shooting in Paralympics 2024, will be honored with the Dronacharya Award.

This decision has been taken in the meeting of the National Sports Award Committee. The National Award Committee meeting was held last week. Sources told Dainik Bhaskar that 30 players will be given the Arjuna Award in 2024. In which 17 players are normal and 13 are Paralympic players.

All the para athletes who have won medals in the Paralympic Games 2024, who have not previously received the Arjuna Award, will receive this honour. India had won 29 medals in Paris Paralympics 2024. These included 7 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze medals.

Under the captaincy of Harmanpreet, India won bronze in Paris Olympics. At the same time, Harmanpreet has won the title of Player of the Year at FIH Awards three times.

Subhash Rana’s team got four medals in shooting in Paris Paralympics. Shooting coach Subhash Rana’s team had won four medals in the Paris Paralympics. This includes one gold, one silver and two bronze medals. Avni Lekhara won gold in 10 meter air rifle, Manish Narwal won silver in air pistol, Rubina Francis and Mona Aggarwal won a bronze medal each in air rifle.

The National Sports Committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge V Ramasubramanyam, includes former Team India cricket player Anil Kumble, former women’s hockey team captain Rani Rampal, boxing Olympic medalist Vijendra Singh, sports commentator Joy Bhattacharya, former Sports Secretary Rahul Bhatnagar, Para athlete Giriraj Singh, athlete Radha Krishnan were included. Apart from these, the Director General of Sports Authority of India, a journalist, CEO of Talent Olympic Podium and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Sports were also included.

The six major awards in the National Sports Awards of India are Khel Ratna, Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award, Dhyan Chand Award, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy (also known as Maka Trophy) and Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award.

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award has been given along with six national sports awards since 2004.

Last year 26 players received Arjuna Award Last year, 26 players including cricketer Mohammed Shami received the Arjuna Award. While 5 coaches had received the Dronacharya Award. Badminton’s star pair Satwik Sairaj and Chirag Shetty were given the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

Mohammed Shami was given the Arjuna Award last year for his excellent performance in the ODI World Cup 2023.
