Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday became the first Prime Minister to visit Guyana for the first time in 56 years. On reaching Georgetown he was given a warm and formal welcome. Guyana President Irfan Ali and more than a dozen cabinet ministers welcomed him wholeheartedly at the airport.
Prime Minister Modi will hold a bilateral meeting with President Mohammad Irfan Ali and address a special meeting of the Parliament of the South American country.

Emphasizing the significance of the visit, India’s Ambassador to Guyana Amit S Telang said, “This visit is significant as it reflects the long-standing and cordial relations between our two countries, which I believe is historically strong. “After almost five decades – 56 years to be exact – this journey is a symbol of the enduring friendship, mutual trust and cooperation that has developed between us over the years.”
Talking about the strengthening ties between India and Guyana, he said, “We also have a growing Indian community in Guyana, which includes students, professionals and people in trade and commerce. Everyone is very excited about this visit, There is enthusiasm and optimism, and I am confident that Prime Minister Modi’s visit will provide new impetus to our partnership.”
Telang also pointed to India’s active role with CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market), of which Guyana is a member. He said, “India is closely cooperating with CARICOM countries through our ‘Voice of the Global South’ initiative, which was launched during our G20 Presidency under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. Many CARICOM leaders have participated in these summits. “Participated and presented their views.”
On Thursday, Prime Minister Modi will hold a meeting with CARICOM leaders during the CARICOM-India Summit. In this, the Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell will also be present with him. The summit aims to strengthen relations between CARICOM and India, focusing on areas such as energy, infrastructure, agriculture, food security, health, pharmaceuticals and technology innovation.
