The CBI investigation revealed that the police had fabricated a false story for fake encounters of both the youths. According to the police, when they tried to stop them at the check post, the youth started firing, in response to which they also fired. Both died in this. But this story proved to be false in court.
In fact, on 30 January 1993, Gurdev Singh alias Deba, a resident of Galilipur in Tarn Taran, was picked up by the team of ASI Naurang Singh, in -charge of Police Outpost Karan. After this, on 5 February 1993, Sukhwant Singh was picked up by a team of ASI Didar Singh from village Bamhaniwala in Patti police station area from his house. Later on 6 February 1993, both of them were murdered in a fake encounter in Bhagupur area of ​​Patti police station.
The police cremated his bodies in an abandoned condition, so the family could not even see his face for the last time. The police had claimed that the two youths were involved in crimes like murder and extortion, but also proved to be false in court.

Fought with years to wash terrorist stains
The family continued a long war to get justice to the dead and to eradicate the stains of terrorism. In 1995, the CBI investigated the case based on the Supreme Court order. Initial investigation recorded the statement of a witness, Gyan Singh on 27 November 1996. Later, in February 1997, the CBI filed a case under Section 364/34 of the IPC against PP Carr and PS Strip ASI Naurang Singh and others in Jammu.
After the investigation was completed in 2000, the CBI filed a charge sheet against 11 police officers of Tarn Taran. These officers included Norrang Singh (then in -charge PP Carr), ASI Didar Singh, Kashmir Singh (erstwhile DSP, Patti), Sita Ram (erstwhile SHO Patti), Darnshan Singh, Gobinder Singh (erstwhile SHO Valtoha), ASI Shameer Singh, ASI Fakir Singh, C. Sardul Singh, C. Rajpal and C. Amarjeet Singh.
Until the evidence disappeared from the judicial file
In 2001, charges were framed against all these accused, but on the basis of appeal for necessary approval under the Punjab Disturbed Area Act 1983, the case was stayed by the High Courts by 2021, which was later rejected.
Surprisingly, all the evidence collected by the CBI disappeared from the judicial file of this case. After the High Court took cognizance, the record was re -prepared on court orders and finally 30 years after the incident, the statement of the first government witness was recorded in 2023.
