New Delhi:
The Tamil Nadu government has replaced the official symbol ‘₹’ of the Tamil letter ‘₹’ from the budget documents of 2025-26 in the state and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also made a sharp comment about it. He said that “This step is a sign of a dangerous mentality that weakens Indian unity and promotes separatist feelings on the pretext of regional pride. The move that promotes language and regional blindness should be avoided.” He also questioned why the DMK did not raise his objection first.
The ruling DMK of the state had replaced the Devanagari rupee sign (₹) in the promotional material for the upcoming state budget on Friday morning – which through its compulsory three -language policy in schools, is an issue amidst the ongoing controversy on the issue of “Hindi imposing Hindi” by the Center.
The DMK government has repeatedly removed the official rupee symbol

As a result, the party has been facing huge political response since morning. State BJP chief K Annamalai said that the symbol of the rupee accepted by the nation has been converted into a dram by the son of a former DMK MLA, calling the state’s ruling party a “fool”. Former Governor, BJP’s Tamilisai Soundarjan alleged that the change is “against the Constitution” and challenged Stalin to change his name to Tamil option.
After this, on Thursday evening, the Finance Minister gave his response while sharing a long post on X. Accusing the DMK of “completely disregarding the creative contribution of a Tamil youth”, he said, “All elected representatives and officials take oath under the Constitution to maintain the sovereignty and integrity of our nation. Removing the national symbol like ‘Rupee’ from the state budget documents is against the same oath that weakens the commitment to national unity”. The DMK government has allegedly removed the official rupee symbol ‘rupee’ from the documents of Tamil Nadu Budget 2025-26, which will be introduced tomorrow.
He said, “The symbol of rupee ‘₹’ is well recognized internationally and acts as a clear identity of India in global financial transactions. At a time when India is emphasizing on cross -paying paying using UPI, should we really underestimate our own national currency symbol?” He also questioned, “If DMK has any problem with ‘₹’, why did he not protest in 2010, when it was officially adopted under the UPA government led by @INCIndia, when the DMK was part of the ruling alliance at the center?”
DMK has claimed that only ‘Ru’ has been used to prioritize Tamil and express his love for language. DMK leader Saravanan Annadurai said, “There is nothing illegal in this … It is not ‘Tasleem’. We give priority to Tamil, so the government carried it forward.” In the election year, the DMK has opened two fronts against the BJP -led central government – the three language policy which the Center wants to implement in Tamil Nadu, and delimitation. The DMK argues that both are tricks to establish the dominance of the answer through language, culture and politics. The Center has said that Hindi is just a language in the bouquets of 22 languages of education policy. Union Minister Amit Shah has assured Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the south will not lose a single seat through delimitation.
However, the dispute is still going on.
