Today in history 11th February: The day of February 11 in history was witness to many big international events. Nelson Mandela, who was running a movement against the policies of apartheid in South Africa, was released only on February 11, 1990 after a prisoner of 27 years. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in June 1964, convicting treason and conspiracy. The day of eleven February 1979, Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah also brought the message of a new life for Khameni when the path of power was opened for him only 10 days after returning from exile.

  • 1977: The then President of the country Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed passed away.
  • 1979: Supporters of Ayatollah Khameni captured Tehran, the capital of Iran. The army returned to its barracks and refused to take up arms to save the current rule.
  • 1990: Nelson Mandela, a great leader who opposed apartheid in South Africa, was released from captivity.
  • 1997: Indian astronomer physicist Jayant V Narlikar was awarded the ‘Kalinga Award’ of UNESCO. He was given this award for the year 1996.
