The first “fantasy flight” took off from Honolulu on Saturday (December 7), bringing smiles to people’s faces. The pilot of United Airlines Flight 3894 announced over the intercom, “Santa has invited us to Christmas Island and all his friends are waiting for us there.” Families whose children are suffering from cancer or who have been orphaned by the death of someone on active duty are taken on a short flight, which returns and lands where they took off.

Upon exiting the flight, children are taken to Santa’s hometown, the “North Pole”. United Airport employees and local volunteers have created this “North Pole”. It is a fantasy winter wonderland created by “transforming the airport gates and maintenance hangars into a sea and island of twinkling lights, twinkling Christmas trees, and Santa along with his elves.”
