Currently, there are 18 monuments in and around the Rajghat complex, including memorials to former Presidents, Prime Ministers and Deputy Prime Ministers. The two exceptions are Sanjay Gandhi and Lalita Shastri, the late wife of former PM Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose memorial has been built here. Sources said that as per the norms, Manmohan Singh’s memorial can be built at the National Memorial, although the space will be allotted by the Central government.

The designated area near Ekta Sthal was developed as a designated place for the cremations and memorials of Presidents, Vice Presidents and Prime Ministers. This was done following concerns over depleting land resources in the capital.
