London: The British Parliament is in the news these days due to voting on a strange law in the Parliament. This law will give people the right to die voluntarily. It has been named the UK’s “Assisted Dying Bill”. It is being said that this bill is a big step closer to reality. Most of the MPs voted in favor of this bill. A large number of votes were cast against it also. Obviously MPs are deeply divided on this issue. However, they were given the opportunity to vote freely without any hindrance on party lines. The people of Britain have also come out on the streets to support this bill.
The public is also demanding the right to die voluntarily. But the question is why do people want to die voluntarily? You might also be thinking that this is a strange law, which will encourage people to destroy their beautiful lives. But it is not so at all. This law is only for those people who are old or in pain due to some serious disease which is incurable and the remaining days of their life are going to be spent in terrible suffering. Only to such people this bill will give the right to die.
Votes cast in the House of Commons
Members of Parliament in Britain’s House of Commons on Friday voted in favor of a bill that would give terminally ill adults in England and Wales less than six months of age the right to die with medical assistance under appropriate legislation. The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill may now go through a lengthy process of amendment by the House of Lords before becoming law, after the bill received 330 votes in favor and 275 votes against.
PM Keir Starmer and former PM Rishi Sunak also voted in favor.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and former PM Rishi Sunak also voted in favor of the bill. A spokesman for Keir Starmer said, “People across the country will be paying very close attention to today’s vote, but it is a matter of conscience.” There is also a provision in the law that if a person forcibly forces someone to take a lethal drug or asks him to die, he can be sentenced to a maximum of 14 years in jail.
What will the bill be like?
MPs who voted in favor said the bill included the “strongest safeguards”. The Bill includes approval of two independent doctors for the decision. Besides, there will also be High Court judges in it. The person concerned will have to take the medicines himself. Former Prime Ministers David Cameron and Rishi Sunak also agree that people who are in pain and facing imminent death should have the option to reduce their pain. Suella Braverman was among those who voted against.
