Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday that India is keen to deepen cooperation with Caribbean countries in various fields. PM Modi arrived in Guyana on Wednesday and said that his visit will “deepen the friendship between the two countries.” This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Guyana in more than 50 years.
Modi said the India-CARICOM summit is expected to strengthen the Caribbean countries’ ties with India in areas such as economic cooperation, agriculture and food security, health and pharmaceuticals, and science and innovation.
CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market) is a regional grouping. The CARICOM Heads of Government and Prime Minister Modi last met on the sidelines of the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2019, where they discussed ways to cooperate in renewable energy and climate change through a US$ 150 million line of credit with India. Modi was received at the airport by Guyana President Irfan Ali, his counterpart Mark Anthony Phillips and more than 12 cabinet ministers, while at the hotel he met Prime Ministers of Grenada Dickon Mitchell and Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados.
Upon reaching here, Prime Minister Modi said in a post on ‘X’, “My welcome in Guyana will always remain in my memories. I am very pleased to meet you, Prime Minister Deacon Mitchell of Grenada and Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados and the Cabinet Ministers of Guyana.
PM Modi was also handed over the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown’ as a testament to the close India-Guyana relations. Modi said, “I am also very happy to receive the ‘Key to the City of Georgetown’ from the Mayor of Georgetown. India looks forward to further deepening cooperation with CARICOM in various fields.
Guyana President Ali said he had the pleasure of introducing Prime Minister Modi to several CARICOM leaders, who are in the city for the second India-CARICOM Summit. “The meeting underlined the strengthening relationship between India and the Caribbean, which is based on shared values ​​and a vision of mutual progress,” President Ali said in a post on ‘X’.
Ali said that Prime Minister Modi also got the opportunity to interact with members of the Indian community in Guyana. He said it was great to see the cultural presentation as part of our ‘One Guyana’ initiative, which showcases unity in diversity and the deep ties that bind the two countries.
